Chicken Chazuke

A new dish was introduced at Old Hen recently!

I was pretty unexcited when I heard that it was chicken breast. But the dashi got me. It gets me all the time.

Ochazuke is one of my favourite dishes to order in a restaurant. It’s not common in Singapore and there’s something about rice in soup that excites my tastebuds. The texture of rice grains swimming in broth is so comforting.

The dish was overall really homey, but it started to lose the flavour towards the end. Still a good option for me when I do visit the place again.

My friends had the set meals for lunch and it came with a small portion of soup or salad. And what a splendid bowl of soup it was. I usually don’t like pumpkin in soup – regardless of Chinese or Western style. But this was just too awesome. It wasn’t too sweet nor pasty. A just-right bowl of pumpkin soup. I would totally order this in its normal portion.

One of the highlights of this visit was getting to know (through R, because I am still an inconsistently awkward adult) that their tables were Ikea solid wood tops with customised bases. So this has become a furniture piece that Immanuel and I have included in our home concept.

A lovely day there, I would say.

I went to old hen a couple of times during the pre-examinations period. I love how they take pride in producing every dish and how while the dishes aren’t the most healthy, they are done so heartily. Everytime I’m there I just enjoy the experience so much.

Old Hen

In a bid to finish up my loads of marking, I went to Old Hen and sat there for 4 hours and marked all the way. It was a fruitful trip but by the time I got home, I was all frozen from marking. Not sure how I should describe it, but marking for hours straight in addition to a day of lessons and oral examinations at another school can leave me feeling quite intoxicated in the most unhealthy sense.

But there are practical ways to overcome this problem. Old Hen is one of them. R recommended me to the place a few months back and I’ve been dreaming of it ever since. For someone who’s not a fan of milk, this place really got it right. The matcha milk is the perfect fuzzy cold drink for me.

This was the second time I had the soba, and they were out of salmon 😦 but I asked to change it to the ahi tuna and they did! And even charged me less as the ahi tuna salad was a cheaper dish.

So here’s my perfectly swopped out soba:
